Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

There are two types of mindsets we can cultivate. One that embraces problems as opportunities to learn, and one that avoids them, often out of fear to fail. People that avoid conflicts can be described as having a fixed mindset. Those who see problems as interesting challenges have a growth mindset. Sometimes we like to switch from one to the other.

Watch the video about these two types of mindsets and discussed with your child:

Learning Assembly | Monday - March 18, 2019

We have been SUPER busy getting ready for ur Maverick Living Museum. On Monday, students in the grade 3/4 classrooms will be presenting/performing as the character they have been learning about/researching. This has required students to use a website to research their character, take that research and record it into planning sheets. Then create a script using the planning sheets. And finally, create some trifolds/posters to display their information. Students are welcome to bring their costume to school any day this week for our photo display. We are looking forward to sharing our work with our peers in our Living Museum. Families are welcome to join us during the presentations.

Social Studies | Maverick Costumes
On Monday March 18th, our class along with the other grade 3/4 classes are hosting a living museum for the other classes in the school. This is connected to our inquiry into "Alberta Mavericks." Students have spent several weeks researching their Maverick in order to perform as them in the living museum. We are also taking portrait photos of each student dressed as their Maverick for our documentation panel. Most students have brainstormed possible ideas for a costume they could wear in order to fully embody their Maverick. It would be extremely helpful is parents had a chat with their child this weekend about their costume ideas to see if some items could be gathered from home. We would like to start taking the portrait photos as soon as possible. If there are any challenges with putting together a costume, students are welcome to wear a nice outfit for both the living museum and their portrait. This is very exciting work, and we are excited to pull this all together!!

Growth Mindset Discussion
Students with a growth mindset understand they can get smarter through hard work, the use of effective strategies, and help from others when needed. It is contrasted with a fixed mindset: the belief that intelligence is a fixed trait that is set in stone at birth. We have been discussing in our classroom how our brain works and that we can learn anything. This week we watched two videos about growth mindset:

John Legend shares a personal story about overcoming early rejections in his career to get to where he is today.

TedTalk: The way we understand our intelligence and abilities deeply impacts our success.  Based on social science research and real life examples, Eduardo BriceƱo articulates how mindset, or the understanding of intelligence and abilities, is key.

We want our students to get excited about reading. As they participate and are encouraged to choose their own books, they become more motivated and interested in reading. Students have access to Scholastic catalogues to order books and learning games. If you are interested, ask your child if they have a book catalogue. Please send your orders by March 8th (tomorrow).

You can also order online at http://www.scholastic.ca/parents/

Don’t miss out on school messages!

Most school messages are sent to parents through SchoolMessenger.  It’s a mass communication tool that allows us to easily and securely send email, phone and text messages to families of students in a particular grade, class, or area.  Messages are sent to the parent email contacts on file at the school.

To ensure you receive important information from our school and the Calgary Board of Education, we ask that you please Subscribe online (if you have not done so already).  This will allow us to send electronic messages on school topics such as student fees, picture days, field trips and fun lunches.

Visit the CBE website at www.cbe.ab.ca , click on the section called ‘Subscribe’, and subscribe today.

Descriptive Writing
The main goal of writers is to create such vivid details that the reader can easily form a precise mental picture of what is being written about. The author may accomplish this by using imaginative language, interesting comparisons, and images that appeal to the senses. Today students started to brainstorm how to describe the picture below, creating a story using their senses.

What do you see?
What do you hear?
What do you smell?
What do you feel?
What do you taste?

Ask your child about his/her ideas for their story!
