Math | Subtraction Video

Subtracting with thousands and hundreds can be hard. In our school, we use Montessori materials to show our work. The video below can help parents to learn how we use manipulatives to support students' learning for math equations. Students are creating their own videos on Seesaw showing how they can solve subtraction equations using different stratategies.

Writing Process & Revision

We discussed this week about how to improve our writing skills. Students were encouraged to brainstorm their ideas before writing, take a break of a day, read and start their revisions and edit their work. Everyone received a laminated checklist (pencil below) to support them check their work with a partner and by themselves.

Research shows that students with better self-regulation skills have higher academic achievement, are more likely to get along with others, and are better able to build and maintain strong relationships.

Fixed Mindset x Growth Mindset

Today we discussed about the difference between Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” ( Dweck, 2015)

How is My Child Doing in School?
It’s important to know how your child is doing in school. Knowing more about your child’s interests, strengths and areas for development are critical to help you support your child’s learning.

What is the four-point scale? What does it tell me?
In K-9, the achievement indicators (Excellent-4, Good-3, Basic-2, Not Meeting-1) signify the extent to which a student has demonstrated achievement of Alberta Programs of Study outcomes organized by report card stem. Report card stems are categories used to organize the Alberta Programs of Study outcomes.

Growth Mindset - The Iceberg Illusion:

We discussed in our class today about success and what means to say that someone is successful, We figure it out that success is like an iceberg: what people usually see on the surface! Things like confidence, wealth, beauty, relationships, and seniority. Meanwhile, there is what people don’t see hiding below the surface. The things that successful people go through or practice, things like persistence, failure, sacrifice, disappointment, discipline, hard work and dedication. Ask your child, how he or she is working to be successful at school!
