Plant Inquiry
Today we start our investigation about plants. Every student received a tomato seed and a mystery seed to plant. We discussed about how scientists develop hypothesis and make observations to learn more about everything. Students had to think about what seeds need to germinate, the things they already know about their two different seeds and what they still wonder about them. We also created a scientific sketch about our seeds to keep track of our experiment. Ask your child about their investigation!

We had a busy week!!!
Our lockdown practice went very smoothly. Students remained quiet and follow all procedures discussed previously.

Unfinished Tasks
We just completed 8 weeks of school since September. All students seemed quite familiar with our classroom routines and expectations. We are working together to teach time management, problem-solving skills and ownership of students’ own learning. On this note, it is important that students keep track of their tasks and focus on completing them during the same week. For example: the writing challenge for this week was introduced on Monday (October 24th). Students had this activity listed on their weekly checklist and received daily remainders about today’s due date. Therefore, some students took some of their unfinished tasks to be completed at home. The objective is to support them in become more accountable for their learning and better manage their time during class. We talked about this since Monday to avoid any surprises.
If your child has some unfinished work, below is a quick overview to support him during the weekend:

-     Reading Practice: They are reading and answering questions about a small text called “Haunted Houses”.
-     Writing Challenge: Create a complete story about the haunted house you described and design last week.
-     Grammar Lesson Mission: Write two sentences for each of these four types:
o   Declarative
o   Interrogative
o   Imperative
o   Exclamatory
-     Math – Problem of the week: One student says that since 9>2, then 987>2134. Is he correct? Use words, pictures and numbers to explain.
Please ask your child why he/she was unable to complete his/her assignment(s) during class and sign the form attached to their work.

Today we started to work in small groups to research about the 6 different Alberta’s Natural Regions (Rocky Mountain, Parkland, Grassland, Foothills, Canadian Shield and Boreal Forest). Students read passages from a book to find the most relevant information about geography, resources, animals and climate. Next step, they will research on the Internet and develop a presentation for the whole class about their region.

Ask your child about which region they are researching!

Today we started using a Weekly Schedule Checklist. This tool will help students to keep track of projects and daily tasks. If tasks are not completed during the week, students might ask your help to finish them at home.

Dear Families,

In Room 4, we have benefitted from having myself and Mr. Pereira as co-teachers for the start of the year. We have had positive and proactive experiences so far.  Today, as per doctor's direction, I will begin my medical leave in advance of my pending maternity leave, as was mentioned in the Welcome Back Letter.  It has been a pleasure spending this last 7 weeks with all of the students in Room 4 and I look forward to seeing how the students grow and learn throughout the year with Mr. Pereira.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Pereira at rdpereira@cbe.ab.ca or Mrs. Jones at csjones@cbe.ab.ca.

All the best,

Melissa Loewen

Welcome to our new classroom blog!

We will be using this blog to communicate things we are working on in class.  It will allow you to see the things we are learning, through pictures, and student comments, allowing you to discuss things that are happening on a daily basis with your child.  By making this home and school connection, together we will be able to bring more meaningful discussion to your child’s learning.

Please feel free to contact me at the school or by email if you have any other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mr. Pereira
