Some of the ideas we discussed in class:

  • Should students be required to wear uniforms?
  • Should animals not be used for science experiments?
  • Should pets be adopted from a shelter instead of a pet store?
  • Should animals not be kept in cages? Should there be zoos?
  • Should electronic screen time be limited for kids?
  • Should girls be allowed to play on boys’ sports teams?
  • Should students be allowed to have cell phones at school?
  • Should schools start later in the morning?

Swimming
Today students worked extra hard in their last swimming class for this term.
They are taking home tonight their Swimmer Progress Report indicating their recommended next level.

Science
A few weeks ago we planted tomatoes and mystery seeds. Some of them are growing fast. We are making daily observations about the development of each seed and comparing the two different types.

Superhero Creative Writing
For the fans of comics and superheroes the passing of Stan Lee this week was really hard. To honor his legacy, we are designing our own superheroes and villains. Students need to think about the personality traits of their characters and develop a story using descriptive words and details. Ask your child how far their are in their creative process.

What Does Good Writing Look Like?
We looked at four different writing samples from other students and graded them from 1 (need improvement) to 4 (excellent). During our discussions, all students were able to agree between the four examples which one needed more improvement and should be marked as 1 (not meeting grade level requirements).

The vast majority agreed on same order of the other samples, but we had a really good discussion before finding consensus. This activity was designed to help students to better evaluate their own work before hand it in. Ask your child to grade their own work and how they can become even better writers.

Prodigy Game

Today I presented an educational game called Prodigy to our class. While we will be using the program during school hours, students can play with the same character at home to supplement their practice!

Prodigy unlocks the power of game-based learning and is designed to be engaging for children. The application actively adapts to keep each child’s learning at his/her own pace, automatically identifies knowledge gaps and scaffolds them through difficult concepts. It is designed to ensure children master fundamental math skills, build fluency, understand complex word problems and develop deep conceptual understanding through the use of virtual manipulatives.

However, students must use Prodigy at school after they have completed their "must do" assignments. Today a few students, didn't have the opportunity to use the game, because they still have unfinished work.

Students are taking home their passwords for Prodigy and their Google Accounts today.
