IN-KIND-DONATIONS
Thank you to everyone who has made a generous contribution to Lake Bonavista Improvement Society’s IN-KIND-DONATIONS. We have raised just over $3000 this year! You can make a donation at any time throughout the school year. If you would like to donate, please click on the link below for a copy of the donation form.
Donations over $25.00 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
In order to reach our fundraising goal, we need to raise an additional $40 per student to provide the same ongoing support as in previous years.
Please make cheques payable to LBIS (Lake Bonavista Improvement Society)

Unfinished Tasks
& When Your Were Away

Some students often argued about their busy lives outside of school and it's impossible to complete their work at home. In class, we do have plenty of time to complete our learning tasks, but some students actually need extra time and some students just spend too much time talking with friends or avoiding more challenging tasks.

Please talk with your child about the consequences of not getting their work done at school and the importance of taking ownership of their learning.

Ask your child if they have any unfinished tasks this week! Click here for more information about this week Unfinished TasksPlease ask your child why he/she was unable to complete his/her assignment(s) during class and sign the form attached to their work.

Netball

Lake Bonavista School is participating in Netball from February 3-7h in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website (www.netballalberta.com): “Netball is an exciting, fast and skillful game of fair contest: It is a game in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball. Players have specified areas in which they can move.”

Parent Council has graciously provided the funding to bring this event into our school.

Consent forms will be sent home in your child’s communication folder. Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event!

Thanks,

Active Living

Multiplication & Division

Today, we learned how to use some Montessori materials to solve multiplication and division problems.
Students practiced a few equations and some started to record a video showing how to solve equations on Seesaw.  Ask your child about their favourite strategy or material to solve math problems.

Building a Tower

We have been discussing about buildings and towers since last week. Today, we started brainstorming and planning how to build a tall construction using popsicle sticks and recycled materials. Some students are working in small groups and others are working by themselves. Ask your child about their plans for their towers.

you’ve never tried anything new!“

Failure is part of our Learning Journey

Today we discussed how failure help us to reflect and improve. Mistakes makes us seek different ways to find the correct answer or to learn new things. Failure, as much as it hurts, is an important part of life. In fact, failure is necessary.

According to Forbes.com, "failure is not a step backward; it’s an excellent stepping stone to success. We never learn to move out of our comfort zone if we don’t overcome our fear of failure. The most progressive companies deliberately seek employees with track records reflecting both failure and success. That’s because someone who survives failure has gained irreplaceable knowledge and the unstoppable perseverance born from overcoming hardship." To read the entire article click here.

We also watched a video from Keith Peters, a Elementary School Principal, about how failure supports students' progress. Take the opportunity to discuss with your child how mistakes help him/her learn. Remember: dreams can actually come true, but it takes guts, resilience and overcoming obstacles to make dreams a reality.

No School for Students Tomorrow

Please remember that tomorrow, Friday January 17, is a non-instructional day at LBS. This No School day is listed on our school calendar (in pdf format) but was not included on our website calendar.

Music | Recorders
All students have received a recorder notice and order form this week.  If you wish to order a recorder for your child at a cost of $4.50, please return the form with cash or cheque payment or online reference # by  Monday January 20.  This order deadline is in place to make sure that the recorders will arrive in time for our February 3 start.

This is also a good opportunity for the students who purchased their recorder in a previous year to make sure they can find it prior to the January 20 order deadline.

If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email.

Thank you,

“Real happiness doesn’t come from getting everything you want. It comes from sharing what you have with others.“

The Tragedy of the Commons

In our sharing circle today we discussed about how individual (and governmental) decisions affect everyone around us.

Is it possible that overfishing, super germs, and global warming are all caused by the same thing? In 1968, a man named Garrett Hardin sat down to write an essay about overpopulation. Within it, he discovered a pattern of human behavior that explains some of history’s biggest problems. Nicholas Amendolare describes the tragedy of the commons

Writing Challenge
This week students are working to create a story and develop a StopMotion video. They are very excited and eager to develop their videos. We have discussed about the creative process to develop animation and videos. Some students are working independently and others with a partner. This project will take two weeks to complete. So, they will have enough time to develop their stories before they start their videos.

Creative process:
  • Write your story on your journal
  • Design all details of your story (background, characters, props). You can use photographs, materials and toys to develop your story.
  • Develop your video (you can also add dialogue, music and sounds to your video)

We want our students to get excited about reading. As they participate and are encouraged to choose their own books, they become more motivated and interested in reading. Students have access to Scholastic catalogues to order books and learning games. If you are interested, ask your child if they have a book catalogue.
Please send your orders by January 13th.
