Our Learning Quest this week!

This is our roadmap for this week:

Ask your child what they were able to complete today!
If you your child was away, please find the details about our weekly tasks here (Note: we haven't started all tasks in this link, yet).

Calvin's Thought of the Week:
“You are your own little light,
shine bright
so everyone can see.”

Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Science | What is an engineer?
Today we discussed about engineers and what they do. An engineer is a person who designs and builds complex products, machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why things work. A engineer try to solve four questions:

1. What is the problem that needs to be solved?
2. Who has the problem that needs to be solved?
3. Why is this problem important to solve?
4. How can this problem be solved?

During the next few weeks, we will be developing hypothesis and experiments to learn more about different materials and building process. We really appreciate if you can save bottle caps, paper towels rolls, pipe-cleaners, strings, straws and other recycled materials that we can use to build different sorts of things in classroom.

Friday - September 27, 2019

We have everything we need to ...

      - be writers
          - be mathematicians
             - be scientists
                - be good readers
                    - be historians
                        - be anything we want!

We worked hard to create our first collaborative art project. The main theme was that we already can do so much, we only need to believe in ourselves. Students had a great time decorating their feathers for almost three weeks and we had help from a few parents volunteers to complete our mural before the Open House. You can find your child's photo on SeeSaw.

Learning About our Brain

We want to unlock our full potential. Most people think their intelligence is fixed, but not in our classroom. We know that working hard, asking for help, patience and practice we can learn anything! Here is the video we watched today and discussed about our brain:

Terry Fox Run 2019

We will be having our Annual Terry Fox Run on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at 2:00pm. Teachers will be discussing with students the life of Terry Fox and the contributions he has made to cancer research. We would like to extend the invitation to all parents and families to join us for the Terry Fox Run! Also, a reminder that our school Open House and BBQ are the same day, so you’re welcome to join all of the events!

Students can dedicate their run to someone who they know that has been affected by cancer. Please speak to your child prior to our run and if they choose to, they can write who they are running for on a sticker that they will wear during the run. These will be available in the classroom on Thursday.

Should you wish to make a donation online, please use the following link to donate through the Terry Fox website:

Writing Challenge
What Does Good Writing Look Like?

Today we looked at four different writing samples from other students and graded them from 1 (need improvement) to 4 (excellent). During our discussions, all students were able to agree between the four examples which one needed more improvement and should be marked as 1 (not meeting grade level requirements).

The vast majority agreed on same order of the other samples, but we had a really good discussion before finding consensus. This activity was designed to help students to better evaluate their own work before hand it in.

The Writing Challenge for this week, students are encouraged to use a graphic organizer to list their ideas before developing their stories.  After finishing their stories, students are encouraged to use a Writing Checklist that helps them reread and edit their own work. Also, they can ask a friend to read their work and give a constructive feedback.

Ask your child to grade their own work and how they can become even better writers.

ADmazing Savings Coupon Books

Unfinished Tasks & When Your Were Away

During work period, students work independently, with a partner or in small groups to complete their daily tasks.  For many different reasons, sometimes they need extra time to finish their assignments. In class, we have our “Ketchup Working Period”, when they have extra time to complete their work. Students that have completed their tasks have the opportunity to read, research about something they are passionate about, play math games, explore our Montessori materials and a few different responsible choices.
If at the end of the week, students still haven’t completed their tasks, they take them home. We know that students have busy lives outside of school and homework might be difficult to align with other family activities. However, it is important for students to be responsible for their own work and be able to manage their time inside the classroom.
If your child has some unfinished work, please ask him/her why they were unable to complete their work in class. We have been discussing about strategies to help us focus, avoid distractions, use our schedule/checklist to keep track of our work and ask for help to complete our learning tasks. Please let me know if you have special strategies that work with your child.

Ask your child if they have any unfinished tasks this week!
