Digital Citizenship

Today in our classroom, some students shared about a disturbing social media challenge that encourages participants to do dangerous things called Momo. Some students comment they heard from older siblings or/and friends and tried to search it online. We had a open discussion about it, but without giving too many details or showing them pictures. The same thing happened in different classes.

The Momo Challenge involves participants receiving social media invitations on platforms like WhatsApp and Snapchat to message an account called Momo. The account is linked to an image of a doll with long black hair, large eyes and a scary-looking smile. In short, the messages ask kids to harm themselves.

Please also talk with your child about safety when using smartphones, tablets and other devices when using the internet. Nowadays, several games have online interfaces that allows gamers to play online with people they haven't meet. Below is a list I've discussed with all our students today.

Our Learning Quest!

We started our week with new learning challenges!
This is our roadmap for this week:

Ask your child what they were able to complete today!
If you your child was away, please find the details about our weekly tasks here (Note: we haven't started all tasks in this link, yet).

Calvin's Thought of the Week:

You have only failed if you have given

up. Until then, it’s learning.

Mindfulness:

Today we watched a video about how sometimes our brain can drive our live instead of us driving our brains. Students talked about how sometimes can be hard to focus and be really present at the moment. Mindfulness helps students manage their feelings more effectively and work through it more quickly. Frequent mindfulness practice—even micro-sessions of a few minutes or less—imparts health benefits. Research suggests that mindfulness programs can improve cognitive performance as well as resilience to stress.

Video:

In addition to frequent discussion about mindfulness and how our brain works, we developed a small corner for students to take a brain break and try to find their focus. Ask your child if they already used our "Driving your Brain" corner.

How our brain looks like when we are under stress or have too many thoughts on our mind and can't focus:

PINK SHIRT DAY:
Wednesday | February 27 is ‘Pink Shirt Day’. All staff and students are encouraged to wear pink on that day to show that we treat each other with respect. Bullying in any form is unacceptable, and we all have a role to play in preventing bullying.

Winter Walk Day
Reminder to Dress Appropriately for the Weather
Tomorrow we will have our Winter Walk in the school field as whole school activity. With the temperatures dipping outside, we want to remind you of the importance of sending your children to school with proper winter wear. Of particular concern are some students who have been choosing to come to school with no coat or refusing to wear them outside. Please be sure to send them with boots, gloves, and hats on chilly days so that the children may benefit fully from their time at school.

Book Club

We want our students to get excited about reading. As they participate and are encouraged to choose their own books, they become more motivated and interested in reading. Students have access to Scholastic catalogues to order books and learning games. If you are interested, ask your child if they have a book catalogue. Please send your orders by March 8th.
You can also order online at http://www.scholastic.ca/parents/

Math Talks | Doubling
In partners, students discussed the problem below:
_______________________________________

If someone offered you the following options:

1. Accept $100.00 today
or
2. Accept $0.50 today and the double you received from the previous day for the next 10 days consecutive

Which option you would choose? Why?

_______________________________________

Before they started working, the vast majority was quite confident that "$100.00 today" was the best option. After they started solving the problem, they saw the effect of doubling even starting with a small amount. We also discussed the different strategies were used to find the answer for this problem.

This lesson was also a initial conversation about Financial Literacy and how interest works. If you have a chance, talk with your child about savings and how to plan for the future.

Byblos Bakery | "For Pita's Sake" - TOMORROW!!!
The program, called “For Pita's Sake,” is still going strong. This program has been designed to teach healthy eating habits consistent with Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating and this fits in perfectly with the school health curriculum

It's also popular because it is presented by a registered dietician. Not only do we teach about our products, but also how they can easily fit into a healthy eating pattern.

Our class will participate on February 21st. Each child is responsible fro bringing in healthy ingredients to put in their pita. Pitas and hummus will be provided by Byblos Bakery.

Math | Multiplication Chart
Today we created a Multiplication Chart to help us learn the multiplication tables

First, we used a table to start putting the answers on paper. Then we will use it to train our memory.

Calgary Young Writers Conference

“Have you ever wondered how authors turn their ideas and stories into books? How a graphic novel comes together? How illustrators can capture a story with a picture? How poetry is inspired and created? The Calgary Young Writers' Conference has the answers to these questions and much, much more! Fun and interesting sessions by real authors and illustrators will turn your curiosity and love of reading and writing into a masterpiece.”
- Calgary Young Writers Conference

This field trip will be held on Saturday the 27th of April, 2019 at Robert Thirsk High School (8777 Nose Hill Dr. NW) from approximately 8:00am - 3:00pm.  Students will need to be dropped off and picked up by an adult and will be supervised by LBS staff while during the conference.  The cost of this conference is $50 per student and only 15 students from LBS can attend.  An information meeting for students who are interested will be held in the Learning Commons on Tuesday, February 19th to discuss further details about the conference and the selection process.

Article
Let kids be bored again to prepare them for a realistic future, says columnist on The New York Times

As we face with a long weekend ahead, this interesting article about how boredom might help us to shine a new light on the issue of keeping our children minds and bodies occupied all the time.

According with the columnist, "boredom teaches us that life isn’t a parade of amusements. More important, it spawns creativity and self-sufficiency.

“I’m bored.” It’s a puny little phrase, yet it has the power to fill parents with a cascade of dread, annoyance and guilt. If someone around here is bored, someone else must have failed to enlighten or enrich or divert. And how can anyone — child or adult — claim boredom when there’s so much that can and should be done? Immediately.

But boredom is something to experience rather than hastily swipe away. And not as some kind of cruel Victorian conditioning, recommended because it’s awful and toughens you up. Despite the lesson most adults learned growing up — boredom is for boring people — boredom is useful. It’s good for you.

The ability to handle boredom, not surprisingly, is correlated with the ability to focus and to self-regulate. "

TED Talk
How boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas

"Do you sometimes have your most creative ideas while folding laundry, washing dishes or doing nothing in particular? It's because when your body goes on autopilot, your brain gets busy forming new neural connections that connect ideas and solve problems. Learn to love being bored as Manoush Zomorodi explains the connection between spacing out and creativity."
