Math Talks | Multiplication
Today we discussed about different strategies to solve the problem below:
We need to buy a few more chairs to our school. Each one will need 4 chair slippers (tennis balls).
A. If we buy 8 chairs, how many tennis balls will be needed?B. If we buy 12 chairs, how many tennis balls will be needed?
Students worked in partners to solve this problem using as many different strategies as possible. In group, we come up with several different ways to solve it, such as:
- repeated addition
- number line
- equal groups
- drawing the chairs
- tally marks
- using dots to represent the chair slippers
The discussion led us to talk about multiplication and how we can solve math problems in a faster and better way!
