Equality x Equity

Today we discussed that equality and equity seem similar, but they have different meanings.
Equality: equal treatment - the assumption is that everyone benefits from the same supports.  While, equity means that everyone gets the supports they need. In education, the term equity refers to the principle of fairness. We agreed that is better to seek equity in our classroom. So, not everyone will get exactly the same, but each one of us will receive the support and what we need to be successful.

Science | Strength and Stability

Today we tested 3 different pillar shapes (triangular, rectangular and cylindrical pillars)
to evaluate the best shape related to the concepts of strength and stability. Ask your child which shape hold more books in his/her experiment!

Math | Large Numbers

Today we discussed about place value when working with large numbers.

Place value is important because it helps us understand the meaning of a number. If people just used numbers randomly, no one would know which numbers people meant. You need place value to understand the order of numbers as well. Using Montessori materials, we discussed the concept of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands when counting and adding large numbers.

Science | Testing and Building

Today we tried to create 3D shapes and structures using plastic sticks and plasticine. Some students tried to create domes, ferries wheel and complex structures. Check your child work at SeeSaw!

Author & Artist Visits!

Author Jace Jax and artist Henry Hama will be visiting our school on Thursday, October 17th! These local Calgarians will be reading their new book Kidsburgh Chronicles Little Jack Jarmagan: A Halloween Tale! Jace Jax has been writing for years. The Kidsburgh Chronicles has been Jace’s pet project for over a decade. Henry is an artist and has always loved drawing pictures. Together, they embark on a journey to transport young and old to the magic realm of Kidsburgh. Most importantly, the core of every Kidsburgh Chronicles story is one that promotes imagination, creativity and courage.

Accompany young Jack Jarmagan as he encounters the creatures lurking in Kidsburgh on Halloween night!

Campfire Stories

Everyday we will have someone reading a story for us, around our campfire. Students can choose an appropriate book for their level and read to our class. They are also encouraged to practice their books prior to reading for their classmates. Ask your child about their favourite book to read to their friends!

Science | Testing Paper Bridges

This week we discussed that a bridge is meant to stay in one place and let things move across the top of it. It needs to be strong and stable to hold the moving loads. There are many different shapes for bridges. Different bridge shapes are used depending on what the bridge’s job will be. Students tested how to create a bridge using only paper and how to make their bridges stronger.

Below are a few examples of our paper bridge testing. Students added a video on SeeSaw to explain their experiments.

Writing Paragraphs

We have been working to organize our ideas into neat and clear paragraphs. We used a graphic organizer called Sandwich paragraph this week to create a story about animal astronauts.
Each paragraph has at least 5 sentences, including a introduction and details:

1. Introduction / Topic Sentence
2. Supporting Details
3. Supporting Details
4. Supporting Details
5. Concluding Sentence

Art | Thanksgiving

Today we created beautiful pumpkins as we discussed the meaning of Thanksgiving.
"There is always, always something yo be thankful for."
Below are a few examples, check your child SeeSaw account for his/her pumpkin!

ADmazing Savings!

Please return any unwanted coupon book or send the payment as soon as possible.
