Yesterday we finished reading "The Breadwinner" book and today we watched the movie. We discussed how the movie was different than the book, and the life lessons we could learn from Parvana. "Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who lives under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001. After the wrongful arrest of her father, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy to support her family. Working alongside a friend, she soon discovers a new world of freedom and danger. Drawing strength from the fantastical stories she invents, Parvana embarks on an epic quest to find her father and reunite her family." Cubby Clean Out Today we are taking home all of our amazing work completed during this year. We have different journals and folders for each subject. A few students decided to throw part of their tasks on the recycling bin, instead of placing some of their work on their folders. Ask your child about their proudest work and memories during this school year. Room 4 Celebration | June 27, 2019 If you would like to provide nut-free snacks for our final day celebration, we will use the early dismissal day on Thursday, June 27 to celebrate the end of an amazing year! We will likely (weather permitting) have a picnic outside and play some whole class games.

Unfinished Tasks & When Your Were Away
Ask your child if they have any unfinished tasks this week!
Today we released our butterflies in our garden. They seemed as sad as we were to say goodbye. Some butterflies decided to hang out with us a little longer and others needed an extra hand to leave their cage.

We’ve all been told that we should recycle plastic bottles and containers. But what actually happens to the plastic if we just throw it away? In this TED-Ed video, we learned about the life cycles of three different plastic bottles, shedding light on the dangers these disposables present to our world.
Also, plastic pollution poses one of the biggest known threats to the ocean, influencing all ecosystems from beautiful coral reefs to abyssal trenches, eventually accumulating in our own food.
Oil sands are a mixture of sand, water, clay and bitumen. Bitumen is oil that is too heavy or thick to flow or be pumped without being diluted or heated. Some bitumen is found within 70 metres (200 feet) of the surface, but the majority is deeper underground.
The Athabasca oil sands are large deposits of bitumen or extremely heavy crude oil, located in northeastern Alberta, Canada – roughly centred on the boomtown of Fort McMurray. These oil sands, hosted primarily in the McMurray Formation, consist of a mixture of crude bitumen, silica sand, clay minerals, and water.

Thanks to our marvelous LBS School Council for providing a healthy, nutritious snack to all students on Sports Day. You may need to pack some extra snacks as it will be an active day! If it’s sunny, remember to bring sunscreen, a water bottle, a hat, and proper footwear. If it’s cloudy, remember to bring a jacket or sweater, a water bottle, and proper footwear. See you at the LBS 2019 Colour Group Sports Day!

Math | Subtracting Decimals
Today we learned and practice how to subtract decimals. The most important thing to remember when adding and subtracting decimals is lining up the decimal point. And making sure when you regroup you add the number and add it to the original total.
We are seeking volunteers for our LBS 2019 Sports Day! We are looking for parents who would be comfortable co-leading (with support from a teacher) a sports day activity. This year, sports day is happening on Friday, June 21st, 2019 from 9:30am until 12:00pm. If you’re available to join us please email Lindsay Brown at librown@cbe.ab.ca. Please note that a valid police clearance is required to volunteer.

Fossil Game - Layers of Time
Want to find out how the history of life is written in the rocks? Let's go!
We continue to learn more about decimals. A decimal is any number in our base-ten number system. Specifically, we will be using numbers that have one or more digits to the right of the decimal point in this unit of lessons. The decimal point is used to separate the ones place from the tenths place in decimals. (It is also used to separate dollars from cents in money.) As we move to the right of the decimal point, each number place is divided by 10. We discussed and practiced creating 100-chart grids with different decimals and comparing them with fractions.
Tomorrow, June 14th we will be celebrating our love of reading by having a picnic with a book. Students will spend some time outside reading their favorite books with their buddy class.
